These meters report electricity consumption on an hourly basis. This enables PG&#038;E to set pricing that varies by season and time of the day, rewarding customers who shift energy use to off-peak periods.  The peak pricing program will start out on a voluntary basis, and the full rollout is expected to take five year.<br \/>\nSo far, the only source I&#8217;ve found for this is the PG&#038;E press release, which was picked up by a number of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recordnet.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20060722\/MONEY\/607220304\/1003\/ARCHIVE\">newspapers<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metering.com\/4316\">trade publications<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/utility.seekingalpha.com\/article\/14872\">PG&#038;E<\/a> earnings call.<br \/>\nThe he said\/she said coverage found an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.turn.org\">industry watchdog group<\/a> that is skeptical that the increased rates to pay for the capital costs of the program will pay for benefits in conservation, and concerned that the program does nothing to decrease overall demand.   It seems logical that giving consumers feedback and differential pricing will shift demand off peak.  Thi<a href=\"http:\/\/energypriorities.com\/entries\/2006\/04\/bpa_ashland_goodwatts.php\">pilot program<\/a>with 100 households in Oregon<\/a> shows the <a href=\"http:\/\/energypriorities.com\/entries\/2006\/04\/peak_demand_management_nutshell.php\">successful shift of demand<\/a> away from peak hours.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smartgridnews.com\/artman\/publish\/article_103.html\">Jesse Berst<\/a>, the former IT analyst who&#8217;s now covering energy cautions that smart metering technology is changing, and buyers should watch out for total cost of ownership and standards support.
