{"id":591,"date":"2004-06-06T20:15:20","date_gmt":"2004-06-07T01:15:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alevin.com\/?p=591"},"modified":"2004-06-06T20:15:20","modified_gmt":"2004-06-07T01:15:20","slug":"digital-id-at-planetwork","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alevin.com\/?p=591","title":{"rendered":"Digital ID at PlaNetwork"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reading about the latest in digital id standard proposals at PlaNetWork, and afflicted with the usual skepticism, well articulated by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gonesilent.com\/~john\/blog\/archives\/000108.html\">John Beatty<\/a>.<br \/>\nI just don&#8217;t think that the big need is for universal single sign-on &#8212; whether we&#8217;re talking about corporate schemes, or touchier-feelier, better-intended open standards proposals from IDCommons and friends.<br \/>\nI think that there&#8217;s a big opportunity to develop design patterns for private and public spaces, supporting:<br \/>\n* progressive disclosure &#8212; create things in smaller groups, and share them with more people<br \/>\n* intimacy gradients &#8212; enabling groups to create more private and more public spaces<br \/>\n* easy group-forming, with socially congenial invitations<br \/>\nThese design patterns are different from the more familiar:<br \/>\n* targeted marketing &#8212; a corporation snags your ID and tries to sell you stuff<br \/>\n* access control &#8212; how an organization restricts access to resources<br \/>\nI&#8217;m glad that someone is working on the standard for representing ID and enabling interoperability, and will be happy to use something standard when it exists.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m more interested in the design of the living room, front porch, and block party, than in coming up with a standard for front door locks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reading about the latest in digital id standard proposals at PlaNetWork, and afflicted with the usual skepticism, well articulated by John Beatty.
